This Saturday the Curragh is hosting an Aussie themed day of racing for the Irish Field St. Leger. Entry is free for Australian citizens and quite a few of us are heading along for what should hopefully be a great day’s racing.

Stars of Racing set for “Super Saturday”
Champions will be crowned on “Super Saturday” taking place at the Curragh on 10th September. As part of the final Irish Classic weekend of the year, the race day will have a major Australian theme to coincide with the running of the prestigious Irish Field St Leger with the day promoting the €220,000 race as Europe’s premier trial race for the Melbourne Cup
Very strong links exist between The Curragh and the “the race that stops the Australian nation” as the Dermot Weld trained Vintage Crop won the Irish St Leger twice and also become the first European horse to win the Melbourne Cup, while 10 years later Media Puzzle’s victory was the second Irish trained success in Australia’s greatest horse race.
The iconic Melbourne Cup will be brought over from Australia to be displayed on the race day, while Vintage Crop and Bruce Davis, Australian Ambassador to Ireland, will be guests of honour. A special Australian wine promotion featuring the world famous Wakefield Wines will take place, while there will be free entry for Australian citizens.
An exclusive preview of the movie “The Cup”, staring Brendan Gleeson and directed by the world renowned Simon Wincer, will be shown on screens during the afternoon telling the story of the 2002 Melbourne Cup won by Media Puzzle. Race goers will also have the chance to enter a competition to win a trip of a lifetime to attend the 2011 Melbourne Cup
Saturday also features the Group 1 Goffs National Stakes with some of Europe’s top 2 year olds battling it out for championship honours, while the Curragh Amateur Riders Derby is another major attraction on the track. It is also ‘Bollinger Best Hat Day with the chance to come along to the races donning your ‘Best Hat’ to be in with a chance to win an indulgent 5* Spa break courtesy of The Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, together with a bottle of Bolly of course! . The judging panel will include Ireland’s leading international tennis star Conor Niland
